POMEGRANATE CHALLENGE: Numbers 20:5

And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us into this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.

Needle WeavingElaine Jaffe

This is needle-weaving. I do this on a warped (threaded) piece of cardboard which I needle-weave on. Various yarns are used. The finished piece is a trifle larger than 12 by 12 inches.

Desert ScenePaula Reuben

I chose [Numbers 20:5] because we lived in China Lake, CA, part of the Mojave, from 1959 to 1966. The desert is not sand dunes as so often portrayed in movies. There are a lot of small plants, some of which seem to spring up from nowhere after the rain. In the desert, sky, sun and land have colors and shadows seen nowhere else, and they blend, one into the other with their own beauty until they are part of the whole. I tried to capture that almost mystical feeling in this work.

The materials are 13-count canvas, dyed to look like parchment; cotton floss; perle cotton; metallic carrying thread.
