Chapter Organizes Mezuzot Workshop
To Benefit Families Displaced by Hurricane Katrina

Dear Pomegranate Ladies,

mezuzotAt our September Day group meeting we came up with a great idea to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We all know that they are getting food, shelter, clothes and money. But we realized that one community the Jewish community has lost something more. Religious objects: torah's, tallits, mezuzah's, challah covers, etc.

We wondered what could we give to them to give them a spiritual lift. Some will not be going back to their homes for a long time and will be moving from temporary home to temporary home. What could we give them to let them know that we care?

Well, we thought of a fabric mezuzah! With a ribbon loop on each end it could be pushpinned to a wall or door frame. It could easily be moved. Yes, I know that one should leave a mezuzah and get a new one at a new home. But for these people the ability to have a piece of Judaica that is theirs and goes with them would be precious.

So the Orange County chapter of Pomegranate Guild is embarking on a quest to make and collect fabric mezuzot. We have contact with one of the Rabbis from New Orleans who is now staying in Houston. He will receive these and make sure that they get to Jewish persons or families.

Our chapter will purchase and place inside these mezuzot a kosher parchment.

We had planned at our next meeting to start making these. But the night group of our chapter had a wonderful idea. How about if we meet on a Sunday afternoon invite any person who wants to come to help make the mezuzahs. They arranged for the use of Temple Beth Ohr in La Mirada.

So on October 9, 2005 at 1 p.m. at Temple Beth Ohr we will work on this together. Temple Beth Ohr is located at 15721 Rosecrans Avenue in La Mirada.

If you can't make this time and want to help, you may send finished mezuzaot to me. If you want to donate to help defray costs we will accept those, too. If you want to donate materials, please email me about that.

For those who would like I can email you instructions to make a fabric mezuzah, just let me know.

Thanks for everything,
Hope to see you there,
Mona Doshay
